Some of what we make is meant to be used. Some of it is meant to be played, watched or experienced. And some of it works behind the scenes — the tools, systems and production technology that help creative work get made.
That can take us from software and applications to interactive entertainment, audiovisual work and the technology behind modern media production.
We don't think those things need to live in separate worlds. Some of the most interesting work happens where engineering, media and creative ideas meet.
Curiosity, with standards.
The name is deliberate.
For us, being an amateur is about retaining the freedom to be curious: to investigate something because it is interesting, try approaches that may not work, and follow an idea further than its obvious first use.
But curiosity is only the beginning.
We prototype, test, measure, learn and refine. We care about the less glamorous parts too: reliability, accessibility, privacy, documentation and the details people notice when something has actually been finished properly.
We make things — and learn from making them.
Research is part of how we work.
Sometimes an experiment answers the question we started with. Sometimes it reveals that the simpler technology was better. Sometimes it exposes an unexpected use for something. And occasionally a result is useful well beyond the project that produced it.
When we have evidence worth sharing and can do so responsibly, we publish it through our Research & Field Notes.
Not because every experiment deserves an article, but because useful knowledge shouldn't always disappear inside the project that happened to uncover it.

The Amateur Limited is an independent company in the United Kingdom.
That independence gives us room to explore different kinds of problems without forcing every idea into the same category.
